This Good Friday morning, as I’m visiting my Facebook friends’ pages, I come across a post about 1 Timothy 4:12. I immediately hit the "love" reaction as I’ve always loved that scripture and appreciated the individual’s feedback.
I keep scrolling, but then I hear, “Go back. There is more.” A warm, safe wave flows through my body. So I go back, reread the post… and it all begins to flow. That scripture touched me deeply and stirred up the Glory.
This is for us.
The Call to Faith in Action Leadership
1 Timothy 4:12 says:
"Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity."
This scripture is a wonderful encouragement for anyone feeling underestimated or unqualified! It serves as a powerful reminder that leadership isn’t about age, it’s about character, faith, and action. Paul’s instruction to Timothy to preach boldly and live as an example reminds us that wisdom and influence come from how we live, not just the number of years we’ve lived.
It’s a call to rise above societal expectations and inspire others by embodying the values we teach. This resonates deeply with how we, too, can lead by example in our own lives, showing love, faith, and integrity in everything we do.
But there’s more to this calling.
We, too, can stand boldly, preach, and walk in faith. We can break the norms and begin to rip apart the generational circumstances, traumas, and expectations that have been passed down for centuries.
How Did Timothy Receive Paul’s Message?
Timothy was a young leader, tasked with shepherding a congregation that likely included people older and more experienced than him. Paul’s words to Timothy weren’t just encouragement, they were an empowerment. Paul was reminding Timothy that his calling wasn’t dependent on human approval but on the authority and purpose given to him by God.
Timothy didn’t shrink back. Instead, he took Paul’s words to heart and stepped boldly into his role as a leader. He continued to preach the gospel, teach sound doctrine, and lead others by example. Timothy’s faithfulness is a testament to what happens when we trust God’s calling over our insecurities or the doubts of others.
Can you relate?
Have you experienced self-doubt, hesitation in action, and worried about the approval others?
I have.
This reminds me of Joshua 1:9, where God says:
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Just like Timothy, Joshua was stepping into a leadership role that felt daunting. But God’s promise of His presence gave him the courage to lead boldly. The same promise is true for us today.
Generational Healing: Breaking the Chains
Did you know that our nerve cells remember the past trauma of our ancestors?
Yes, that’s right. We still have fight, flight, and freeze reactions due to the negative, horrifying, and abusive circumstances that our great-great-great-grandfathers and grandmothers endured.
So, when it comes to older generations, whether it’s your mom, dad, grandmother, grandfather, great aunt, or uncle, accepting the storms, disruptions, pain, and abuse of the past isn’t just about how they were raised. It’s also about what they carried inside them even before birth.
You see, this isn’t just a poetic idea; it’s backed by neuroscience. Our autonomic nervous system (ANS) is constantly scanning for safety or danger, even below our conscious awareness. This process, called neuroception, is shaped not only by our immediate environment but also by past experiences, even those of our ancestors.
For example, if someone grew up in a home where anger was expressed violently, their nervous system might interpret even neutral facial expressions as threatening. This is why breaking generational cycles is so challenging. It’s not just about changing behaviors but also about rewiring the nervous system to feel safe in new, healthier environments.
Romans 12:2 reminds us:
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Renewing the mind isn’t just a spiritual practice, it’s also a biological one. Through practices like meditation, somatic healing, and intentional thought patterns, we can literally rewire our brains (a process called neuroplasticity) and create new pathways for healing and growth.
This is why being a generation breaker is so important. It’s not just about changing your life; it’s about breaking cycles that have persisted for centuries while incorporating new pathways for the next generations.
But know this:
You will endure misunderstandings. You’ll hear, “You’re wrong.” You may feel the sting of rejection for embracing “new” ways of living. You might face negative feedback when you set boundaries, embrace healthy communication, or build healthy supportive systems. You will get slashed for making mistakes, because since you are trying to do better you shouldn't mess up. That is not a fair expectation.
This is why Galatians 6:9 is so powerful:
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Breaking generational cycles is hard, but it’s worth it. You’re planting seeds of healing, freedom, and transformation, not just for yourself but for future generations.
You will still make mistakes, and that is okay. Breaking cycles doesn’t require perfection. It requires humility, reflection, and action. The key is recognizing when something needs to shift, owning it, and choosing differently next time. That’s real leadership. That’s real growth. Learn from the circumstances and apply that wisdom to your life.
Remember this: everything worthwhile isn’t easy. Change isn’t always understood in the moment.
Be Bold, Lead by Action
Leadership is about living as an example of great character, faith, and wisdom. It’s about empowering others and encouraging them, even while understanding that they must make the decision for themselves.
Paul also reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7:
"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline."
This verse is a reminder that we are equipped with everything we need to lead courageously. The Spirit within us gives us the power to break cycles, the love to lead with compassion, and the discipline to stay faithful to our calling.
So, let me ask you:
Are you the one who is the generation breaker?
Are you the one who has been yearning for change, knowing you want more, seeing better for your life but feeling unsure how to achieve it?
Are you tired of the constant circling, wondering if things will ever change?
You weren’t just born into your family; you were sent with purpose.
Your Time is Now
It’s your time to step out boldly. To gain the knowledge you seek. To embrace your true character and embody who you are authentically. To say yes to faith and take action.
This is your moment to break the cycle, to rewrite the story, and to create a legacy of love, faith, and freedom.

Embrace Boldness: Take one small, bold step today, whether it’s setting a boundary, seeking support, or saying no to something that doesn’t align with your values.
Practice Somatic Healing: Engage in practices that calm your nervous system, like deep breathing, meditation, or grounding exercises. These not only help you feel safe but also create space for transformation.
Seek Guidance: You don’t have to do this alone. Having someone who has been there to guide and support you can make all the difference.
